Speaker:  Matthew D. Mingus, Associate Professor of History at the University of New Mexico-Gallup, 2009 Ristow Prize Winner, and Book Review Editor for The Portolan. His first book, Remapping Modern Germany after National Socialism, 1945-1961, was published in 2017.

Presentation:  "Mapping a Defeated Germany in the Aftermath of World War II" -- After defeating the Nazis in the Second World War, the Allied powers occupied a German nation-state that was experiencing extreme territorial instability. This presentation will discuss some of the strategies and maps used by bureaucrats, educators, public relations firms, and the various Allied militaries to convincingly denazify, truncate, and divide postwar Germany. Not only is the cartographic chaos after World War II interesting, but it also shows just how vital maps were (and are) in constructing new political realities.
