Title: Mapping in the Islamic Tradition

This event, focusing on Islamic cartography, will feature two speakers. In addition, G&M staff will give a short talk on related acquisitions and a display of collection items from the Geography and Map Division and the African and Middle Eastern Reading Room.

12:30 – 1:00 pm, Meet and Greet

1:00 – 2:00 pm, Surveying the Surveyors: Modern Maps of Afghanistan and Their Critics, given by Dr. Shah Mahoud Hanifi, Professor of History, James Madison University. He is a historian with research interests in the Middle East, Islamic urbanism, migration, diasporas, and cartography.

2:00 – 2:15 pm, Geography and Map Division Acquisition Presentation

2:15- 4:30 pm, Special Joint Display with African Middle Eastern and Geography and Map Divisions (LJ113)

3:00-4:00 pm, Şūrat ad-Ard: Ways of Seeing Islamic Depictions of the World and Beyond, given by Dr. Karen C. Pinto, Associate Scholar, Religious Studies, University of Colorado, Boulder. She is author of Medieval Islamic Maps: An Exploration (University of Chicago, 2016).

4:00 – 5:00 pm, Reception in LJ119
