Title: “17th-19th Century Survey Maps of Towns in New York and New Hampshire: Stories from Between the Lines”
Speaker: John W. Delano, Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus, Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Science, University at Albany, State University of New York; member of Williamsburg Map Circle and Washington Map Society.
Summary: The colonial lands in the northeastern United States were often heavily forested, wet, and rugged. The early survey teams faced challenges that were recorded in their field books. Despite these challenges, the precision of their measurements was often better than 0.5 degree over distances of 6 miles. In addition, the early settlers on the original 100-acre lots of those northeastern towns also had engaging stories.
